Introduction to Substance Painter

Free introduction chapter

Perfect For Beginners

In this Introduction to Substance Painter series, you’ll learn everything you need to know in order to get started with Substance Painter. The first part will get your familiar with the commonly used tools, and in the second part, we’ll texture a real-world asset. We also cover essential texture practices, helping you develop a proper workflow you can use to texture anything.

Taught by Senior Texture Artists

Your instructors have worked as Senior Texture Artists in the film industry, having painted textures on Batman V Superman, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Venom – and much more! The experiences from painting professional assets are shown throughout this series. Instead of purely talking about technical features, you’ll learn far more about the texture painting workflow.

Learn Hard Surface Texturing

In the second part, we cover how to paint awesome hard surface textures in Substance Painter, using proven techniques. We carefully build up the different materials step by step, showing everything involved. You’ll also learn what areas to prioritize, showing you what areas are worth spending more time on.

PBR Workflow

We’ll be texturing using PBR shaders in Substance Painter, using the metallic/roughness approach. This is an industry standard way of painting, which makes texture painting a lot easier to do – and to understand. PBR is used extensively in film, games and commercials and has taken the industry by storm over the last years.

I have been toying with Substance Painter off and on never making much progress. After three episodes of this excellent tutorial I got it and I am enjoying the rest.

  • First Class Tutorial!

Informative and entertaining, the high quality of this tutorial is what we have come to expect from the FlippedNormals team!

Anyone who is looking to start using Substance Painter, this tutorial series is for you, giving new users a basic understanding of the program in a clear, concise and easy to follow way. In my opinion, the best way to learn any new software is by doing and FlippedNormals have this covered as a fan is textured.

I can’t recommend this tutorial highly enough! It is well worth the investment!

  • Absolutely perfect

This tutorial was amazing! It goes in-depth on a lot of the options in Substance Painter and it helped me learn a lot! I absolutely recommend this if you need help in Substance! I can’t wait for them to come out with the more organic focused tutorial that they mentioned at the end! All of their tutorials have been so helpful and eye-opening, they are really amazing at explaining these things in an interesting way! Thank you so much Flipped Normals!

  • I'm a Huge Fan of this Fan Tutorial!

I’ve been avoiding Substance Painter for a while, because when I first opened it, it didn’t make much sense, so I just pushed it aside and kept working on my old school texturing workflows. This tutorial series finally made things click in my head though, and now I feel like I fully understand how to properly use Substance Painter. I really didn’t think it would be possible to make an interesting tutorial about texturing a fan, but once I saw the way everything is layered together, it made me start viewing everything in my life from the perspective of Substance Painter layers. This tutorial is awesome, and Substance Painter finally makes sense.

  • Really Great in Depth Tutorial

Great tutorial for beginners and intermediate learners new to substance painter really goes into the depth of the “why” as well as breaking down the overall application and simplifying the overall process i couldn’t recommend it more i followed the tutorial form start to finish the narration was spot on as well more than helpful. No faults really great tutorial overall only wish there was more used cases from the introduction chapter inputted on the practical chapter of the tutorial “Fan” section. For example maybe going away from the reference and finding more practical use cases for opacity for example, Maybe also the wires could of been a fabric woven material to showcase how it could textured if you wanted to do that with your model. Looking forward to more great tutorials. Still holding out for a 48hrs character tutorial from you guys! 😉

  • Sold_Useful

I have purchased a few tutorials in the past; but the instructors did not have a cohesive plan or had a disjointed manner for the task and more painful spoke English to fast as a second language.
    Patients is a virtue;
This Tutorial; is not waste of time or greenbacks.
    Be-well,

  • Probably the best...at least the best I've found.

Unlike other tutorials available, this tutorial speaks to ‘why’ it is using each methodology. Not only that, it relates it directly to production concerns. Therefore, this tutorial is perfect for those learning to Painter for working in a studio environment

  • Amazing!!!

I’m a graduate student and here in my college we don’t have Substance Painter, we basically learn the Photoshop workflow to make a texture. Indeed the intro videos from Allegorithmic are quite good to learn a thing or two on how it works but it lacks some things. This course not only shows you the software and how it works but connects it with the fundamentals and show you a proper way of using it in a more professional way.

The course is amazing and helped me a lot to learn and to apply it to other projects of my own, right after I did all the textures from a short movie I’m making and I did way better and faster with the course

  • One of the best Substance Painter courses out there

I am a complete beginner in substance painter that doesn’t really enjoy going through long documentations of software. This tutorial is exactly what I needed!

The first part taught me how to use the software and the second part demonstrated how to implement the techniques learnt earlier into the texturing workflow.

However, this course is not great just because it teaches you the tool, but also because the two tutors went in depth into explaining the fundamentals of texturing, which is essential for a developing texturing artist.

    Thank you for making this!

  • Another comprehensive learning resource for anyone studying game art!

As an educator I keep my eye on instructional content providers to see if there are resources available that would enhance the delivery of my curriculum. Time after time I find myself visiting FlippedNormals and investing in their educational resources. This tutorial series is a shining example of the quality I have come to expect from Henning and Morten.

It is a comprehensive, detailed, insightful introduction to an industry standard software tool, Substance Painter. I have pointed all of my students toward the resource and invested in a copy for myself to refresh and deepen my understanding of the tool.

If you are looking for an excellently paced and detailed introduction to modern game art texturing, look no further.

  • Really good intro to Substance Painter

I enjoyed from start to the end this tutorial, the course is short but full of informations. It’s really made for beginners with no knowledge about SubP and it’s easy to find which information you want!

I can’t wait to have more in depth tutorials to learn more about this software 🙂

  • Just awesome!

Very well structured and thought through.
The explained texturing workflow/approach is super easy to understand and will be so helpful when texturing your own assets.
The chapters are also very well named and not to long, which will make it easy to find and rewatch certain stuff in the future.

    Thanks for the great content!

  • Best one I've done.

I enjoyed this tutorial and learned some things. The content was easy to follow and understand. Most of the concepts shown in the intro chapters were later used in the fan project which helps to reinforce them. I also enjoyed that there were two commentators during the intro videos; it was well done they didn’t step over each other and each added good points. I thought the price was right, would be even without discount code, I know I’ve spent a lot more for less. I work a lot and CG is just a hobby to replace traditional art I don’t have time for anymore. I’m not a total Substance beginner, but it was a good refresher and it went farther than what I did know lots of tips and tricks. I do A LOT of tutorials on Blender, Substance Painter, Zbrush, Fusion 360, Marvelous Designer and renderers (Thea, Octane, Marmoset, Vray, and I’ll probably buy Redshift and Keyshot some night at 3 a.m.). Tutorials satisfy my artistic itch, and can be completed in a reasonable amount of time. I look forward to more tutorials by these guys (only modeler I use is Blender and Zbrush though, not Maya, I don’t have the time to learn anymore of those. Although I can usually translate them been at Blender for awhile now.). So if you were on the fence jump down it’s a good deal.

  • A must-have!

I’m somewhat of a beginner with Painter, so I needed a course that would give me a good overview and demonstration of what the software is capable of.

Needless to say, I got exactly what I was hoping for with this course and more!
The entire thing was very well-structured and easy to follow-along with. I did not feel lost at any point throughout, and it felt really satisfying to go through each step.

After this course, I feel a lot more confident in my texturing workflow!

  • The Most Thorough Substance Painter Course!

I’ve tried many courses on Substance Painter, but they weren’t clear as to how you go about making ANY material you need. This course is the only one I’ve found that teaches you the theory behind creating textures in Substance.

If you want to learn Substance Painter, then this is the place to start.

    Thank you for your feedback.

  • Really, really good!

    Definitely worth every penny!
It’s much more than a simple introduction. It also covers a lot of texturing theory and workflows!
    And it’s structured very clearly.
So, if one’d have to re-watch something in order to find information, you wouldn’t have to skip through hours of video. I’m very happy I bought it!
And you’ll be too! So stop wasting your time reading the reviews and buy it 😉

  • One of the best courses ever!

I wasn't an absolute beginner when it came to Substance Painter, I've played with it over the past months. But when there were other things to do and I didn't have time for SP for weeks, I forgot some things. Then I had to search through Allegorithmic's video tutorials over and over again until I found the information I was looking for. Yes, there is the documentation, but written instructions have never been my thing. I want to see how it works in a video.

In this course, I see the options/tools directly in the table of contents, and that's just great. It was the main reason why I bought the course – no more wasting time in search for the needed information. But this course exceeded my expectations by far!
The course is great done, for absolute beginners as well as for someone like me who has played a few times with SP before.
The pleasant voices lead me through the different chapters, and explain exactly how to handle SP. There are many useful tips and tricks, and finally a section in which a project-based model is textured.
For me one of the best courses ever, and as far as Substance Painter is concerned, an absolute "must have". The course is worth every single cent many times over. 10 stars for this product! (a pity I can only give it 5 for real.)
