Creating Your First High Quality 3D Prop
Learn how to make your first high-quality 3D prop! This course aims to help deliver guidance to the creation process, and set anchor points for you to understand the fundamentals of what goes into modeling, unwrapping, texturing, and rendering a 3D prop completely from scratch.
When modeling, it’s critical that we work as efficiently and as flexible as possible so that we are not unintentionally committed to any one direction before we want to be. Throughout this series, we will utilize several time-saving modifiers and modeling techniques that are going to help carry most of the modeling work, and offer us the ability to easily play with our designs before we want to fully commit.
Learn about the “layering” technique used for developing convincing PBR textures, using Substance Painter. In this series, we will learn about the properties of several different materials, which will enable you to replicate these surfaces across any future props you may wish to create!
We will look at setting up a render in Blender’s Cycles engine, where we’ll create a portfolio-ready render. Blender offers a fantastic look-dev environment for us to quickly prototype our final renders, giving us real-time feedback that you can’t quite get from any other path-tracing render engines.
Charlie “Chunck” Trafagander is a Freelance Game Artist, Indie Dev, Tutorial-Maker, and in general a curious mind. Having worked for a few Indie developers, he has been able to touch most roles in game development, which he also likes to break down in various formats on his YouTube channel “Get Learnt”. Currently, he is working as a Material Artist in the AAA industry.
It’s recommended you at least be comfortable navigating Blender and Substance Painter, as this is not intended to be an introduction to either software. Throughout this series, we will look at how we can incorporate both of these tools into a consistent 3D prop development workflow.
