Introduction to Maya

Learn Maya Today

With over 12 hours of high quality training, you’ll learn everything you need to know in order to get started with Maya! We’re looking at topics like 3D modeling, retopology, xgen, rigging, shading techniques, lighting and using Arnold for rendering.

About your instructor

Your instructor, Henning Sanden, has worked in Maya for a decade. During his film experience, he’s worked with Maya on movies such as Alien Covenant, Pirates of the Caribbean, Venom, Pacific Rim: Uprising, Batman V Superman – and many more! The techniques shown in this series are based on his career in film.

Project Based

We believe it’s important to learn both how the tools work and also how to actually practically use them. The spartan helmet project is a 3.5 hour long real time series where you can easily follow along. We cover setting up image planes, making an industry standard 3D model, advanced shading techniques, grooming with Xgen and finally lighting and rendering everything with Arnold.

  • Best series ever...Tons of modelling tricks and shortcuts

I had issues using Xgen module and Arnold displacement and I’ve tried many times.
in Xgen I get only few hair even if I increase hair count to 3000 and above.
and displacement map is not giving me proper details.

  • A good place to start!

This is a great place to start for beginners who are interested in learning Maya. Having learned Maya from Lynda some long years ago, I say Flippednormals does a better job at explaining the basics. The videos themselves are short and concise, they cut right to the chase so you are not wasting time and they bring up some common problems that Maya comes with which I think is the main reason why people think Maya is broken or doesn’t work for them. They also show some neat keyboard shortcuts that I didn’t know about, which is incredibly helpful (feeling embarrassed not knowing this after using Maya for 5 years…). Overall, they cover every basic concept you need to know within Maya.

That said, comparing to Lynda, I find this to be far better. And remember, the best way to learn is to put it to practice, and start creating! The money you spend here is well worth the knowledge you’ll gain, and I think that might go for any other Flippednormals tutorials (I bought several), so good job guys!

  • Maya Beast Tamer!

Maya is a beast of a program, but Henning does a fantastic job in breaking the program down into smaller pieces and making it easy to learn, even for a complete beginner. He is thorough, in-depth, fun, professional, and sticks to making sure you learn what’s important and why so you can be confident within the program and be ready for industry work. A lot of love, work, and pride went into making this and it shows in every chapter. Highly recommended, highly praised, and a must have for beginners and those wanting to take their skills to the next level.

  • Great series

Very nice tutorial easy to learn, very helpful for those who want to learn Maya from scratch. This tutorial is going slowly. It’s a lot to take in and most of the “beginner” tutorials still go super fast.

  • Perfect!

The first purchase on this marketplace for me, been waiting for this tutorial for a long long time. Very detailed and nicely paced learning experience. I will definitely buy the Intro to Substance painter and Intro to Zbrush.

Just a question for FlippedNormal, Is there any workflow lesson work gaming industry?

  • Tons of detail

Love this series, it has tons of information about Maya, it’s has quite a slow paste, quite simple explanation. I would really wish that he would show what keys he was pressing.

-1 star because when I am following this tutorial, I was doing everything he was telling me to. but, I made a mistake and I didn’t realise it. When I did, I had no idea how to fix it, had to go over the “learning Maya” and dig the answers there. I wish he would say like “if you can’t get sculpting to work, and you are seeing a message, refer to [X] video to fix it” or something like that. So that I knew how to know if I did or didn’t do something wrong. Hopefully, that made sense.
