What You’ll Learn

Are you thinking about a career as a 3D artist in the video game industry? Do you want to become a faster and more efficient modeler and learn the latest techniques in 3d modeling, texturing and game art? This tutorial will help you understand and apply all aspects of creating high-quality PBR game assets!

Follow this course as we model, unwrap, bake, texture and render a military radio to current generation video game standards. Every step is documented without fast forwarding.

Intro to Maya and ZBrush
In this chapter, I`m giving you a detailed overview of my workflow in over 3 hours of fully commented video. I will be providing you with all the scripts, hotkeys, and plugins that I use on a daily basis. I will walk you through where to get them and how to install all of them. I will give you detailed examples when and how to use them in your workflow, turning both Maya and ZBrush into powerful tools for hard surface modeling.

Maya and ZBrush – Modeling
The modeling part covers the scene setup followed by the block out, high-poly and low-poly modeling of the military radio in which we make use of advanced actions, modifiers, and scripts. You will learn how to use ZBrush to quickly create a high-poly model as well as add some wear and tear and dents to your asset. After the modeling process, we will jump straight into creating UV coordinates for the asset and focus on the importance of an optimized UV-Layout to get the highest texel density possible.

Substance Painter – Texturing
After modeling, we will bake our asset in Substance Painter. You will learn how to create perfect bakes and how to create all the maps needed for the final asset.  Right after, you will learn how to make an ultra-realistic texture for the military radio.

You will learn how to create new materials from scratch and use procedural textures, masks, and generators to add wear and tear on our radio resulting in a photorealistic appearance. You will also get to know the latest tools that Substance Painter currently has to offer. In addition to creating your own materials, you will learn how to implement materials from substance share into your design and iterate on them further.

Marmoset Toolbag – Rendering
In this chapter, you will learn how to create realistic renderings for your military radio in Marmoset Toolbag. I will be teaching you how to light your object and set up your camera and environment to create realistic lighting for your object. I will teach you how to create portfolio ready images using post-processing effects through the marmoset cameras as well as final adjustments in Adobe Photoshop.

  • The Only Tutorial You Need to Learn Modeling

It’s an excellent tutorial to get you started. When I pick this up, I didn’t have much experience with Maya or any other 3d program, but Simon did a great job breaking down and explaining everything in detail. All in all, I really recommend this tutorial.

  • Definetly not for begginers...

It is a very good tutorial, he explains his toughts and process very well, but it has a major flaw. The content of this course and the way it is explained is not aimed for people starting out in Maya. I will have to buy a more introductory course before I can continue this one, since I don’t know how he is doing what he is doing for the most part, and I am someone that is used to 3d, I simply wanted to learn a new software. If you buy this course, please know that it is assumed that you allready know the “begginer” stuff, hence the fact that saying explicitly that it is aimed for such level of skill is misleading.

  • Superb Tutorial

This tutorial details everything from start to finish and Simon is clear and concise all the way through. It shows you some great techniques and even goes through some errors that might occur along the way. We get to see the workflow from block out to final render in great detail and it’s narrated throughout with a lot of care. This is definitely a tutorial that has helped to really improve my own skillset and push me to feeling more competent and confident and I am eternally grateful to Simon for his hard work putting this together and releasing it at great price for what’s included within. I’ve done my fair share of tutorials and courses over the years but this is by far the best, superb from start to finish.

    Thank you Simon!

  • A whole new level beyond excellence - This is a steal!

This is one of those tutorials where the creator will lead you step by step to the final result and Simon did a hell of a job in that regard! The amount of information is just overwhelming and the final result is excellent. Not to mention that on top of all of that Simon offers support and is willing to answer to your questions.

This price for a 28 hours of a handheld tutorial by an industry professional.. well that’s a steal.

I think that this tutorial is even beginner-friendly so the tag could be changed from Intermediate to Beginner. Or, at the very least, add the tag so that both are present since the final results are indeed more than what a mere beginner could ask for!

Lastly, just a friendly reminder that the workflow described in this tutorial can be PC-performance intensive! So, if you have a lower-end PC [as I have] you might have trouble following certain parts of the tutorial or you will have to switch to modelling another type of object in order to get along. I would even suggest the latter as you will learn better how to deal with the problems that can occur in the process.
