Rig Anything With Rigify

Rig Anything with Rigify

Course Intro

Do you find rigging in Blender difficult? Tried and failed to build advanced rigs for your characters? Do you find it takes forever to create even a rudimentary rig?

You’re not alone. Rigging is tough. It requires a high level of both artistic and technical skills.

Lucky for us Blender offers us an easier solution: a free addon called Rigify. It’s not enabled by default, therefore many people don’t even know it exists. And its’ advanced features are hidden behind a slightly unintuitive interface. Thus few artists utilize it to its full potential.

Due to a lack of quality information, a lot of Blender users think that Rigify is all about the “Human Meta-rig”. But the human rig is nothing more than a shortcut that solves a common problem: rigging a simple humanoid character.

When you learn how to use Rigify properly you can rig just about any character.  To get an idea of the characters we’ll rig together in this course, see the images attached in the product info.

Build your Rigs from Lego Blocks

Rigify is a modular rigging system. It provides the artist with easy to understand building blocks like legs, arms, spines, tails, and many more. Using those you can rig almost any character.

Traditional rigging, on the other hand, deals with abstract and complicated concepts like constraints, drivers, local vs world transformations, matrices etc. The truth is, most artists won’t have the time to learn manual rigging at an advanced level. Thanks to Rigify, we don’t have to.

So Rigify is pretty awesome… The only problem is figuring out how to use it.

➡This is where this course comes in.

You’ll learn how to rig any character in the following three modules: Rigify Basics, Rigify Video Manual, and Advanced Rigify Sessions (Draong and Ogre rigging).

*Module 1: Rigify Basics(Available for FREE)*

In “Basics” you’ll learn the most important aspects and basic concepts of Rigify. Rigify does not work like traditional rigging. You need to understand the philosophy behind it in order to use it correctly. The first 3 chapters will take care of that.

This module is FREE! See https://cgdive.com/rigify/ for details.

1. Intro to Blender Armatures
2. Overview of the Rigify Workflow
3.Rigging with Meta Rigs (biped and quadruped)
4. Extending the meta rigs and avoiding bad practices
5. The Rigify Building Blocks, aka Rig Types
6. Creating a custom Meta Rig from scratch: Alien Character
7. Usability Improvements
8. Posing your character using the Rigify rig

*Module 2: The Rigify Manual *

The “Manual” is for people who want to understand every single option you find in Rigify. I go over each and every Rig Type/Building block and explore every option you’ll encounter. There are meta rig options that affect how the rig will behave after it is generated. There are also options in the Generated rig that change the behavior of the Armature on the fly. All of that is covered in this module. It will teach you the correct workflow, which will help you avoid errors.

*Module 3: Advanced Rigging Sessions*

In this part, we’ll rig several complex characters together.

This module includes rigging a Dragon and a Two-headed Ogre. One more session is planned, probably a bird wing. These characters allow me to demonstrate creative and unorthodox usage of the Rigify tools.

  • Dragon Rigging

Sneak Peek here:

In this session, we’ll rig a dragon using Rigify. Rigging the body and limbs of the Dragon with Rigify is so easy that I decided to add something really special to this series: a custom face rig that works with Rigify. This is achieved using one of the most advanced features of the addon. You won’t find this workflow ANYWHERE else!

  • Two-headed Ogre Rigging

In this series, we’ll rig a humanoid character with two heads and faces. His large muscles and belly pose a special challenge. As with the Dragon, building the basic rig using Rigify will be easy as pie. That will allow us to focus on a few more interesting areas.
-advanced shoulder rig
-automated controls for cumbersome areas like elbows, knees, belly etc.
-advanced weight painting

BLENDER FOR MAYA RIGGERS and MAYA ANIMATORS

If you’re coming from Maya as a rigger I think you’ll love Rigify, which is Blender’s auto-rigging system.

And if you’re a Maya Animator, Rigify can help you create versatile rigs quickly so you can start animating right away.

  • Cool, looking forward to getting into this course!

Im new to blender and rigging, and there’s no way I’d figure it out on my own, so thank you for putting in the hard work to map out our path to rigging excellence 🙂

Hey, in a future update, could you batch all these downloads in 1 or 2 big zip files as an option (I have a very fast internet connection, and having to download 27 files is kind a hassle).

As for the downloads, it’s just the Ogre that is segmented. I’ll try to upload a full zip file in the next couple of days!

  • Meets expectations and then some

Early days as I am still working through the tutorials. Pace and presentation are at the correct level. I am looking forward to completing the rest of the course. Keep up the good work and I am looking forward to rigging with muscle movement if possible.

  • Unbelievable, one of the best Blender tutorials out there!

In just 30 minutes, just 30 minutes! this tutorial will teach you a fast and very simple way to rig any character, and that’s just the first of many lessons in the tutorial!

I cannot stress enough how happy I am with this purchase: simple, straight to the point and all lessons have a purpose.

    • Hey, thanks for the positive review! Really appreciate it!

The 30 minutes video you mentioned is probably the “Intro to blender armatures”, right?
It was intended as a quick overview of bones in Blender that prepares you for work with Rigify. But it seems like a lot of people are liking this video more than I expected.

  • The missing Rigify manual

The official documentation for Rigify is sorely lacking, and I spent hours searching for YouTube videos or blogs to figure out how you’re actually supposed to use the addon. This course solves all those problems, and I only wish I had found it sooner in the process. In addition to describing how armatures work in general and the problems that Rigify seeks to solve, it dives deep into the workflow and how each rig type works.

Additionally, and this is more of a personal preference, but I feel like a lot of courses ramble on and repeat themselves to pad out their runtime and justify their prices (“over 300 hours of material!”, who has 300 hours to watch one course?), this course feels tightly focused and well structured. The author does a good job of getting straight to the point, and that makes it a better value than courses with “more material”, which really just means “longer for no good reason”.

If you want to learn to use Rigify how it was intended to be used, you owe it to yourself to pick this one up.

  • This dude really is a fantastic teacher

I learned really a lot from just the first lesson (8 in total), which doesn’t even touch Rigify. Instead, it teaches you how to do a proper rig with the vanilla tools. Believe me, that’s a good thing. This course is excellent for someone who’s just getting into Blender or rigging in Blender.

  • Great series to speed up your rigging workflow

Why reinvent the wheel every time you go to rig a character? This series helps speed up your rigging work flow by showing you how to use Rigify as a modular set of tools to approach various rigging problems. I had previously just seen it as a quick solution to rig humanoids, but after watching this series I appreciate how it’s so much more than that. Bargain price for the productivity boost you’ll achieve!

  • Very thorough, good explanations

I am an intermediate level user of Blender and have made a few simple rigs not using Rigify. This tutorial showed me the mostly hidden power of Rigify and I’ve started making custom rigs using the Rigify components. The instructor is clear and the example blend files that come with the course are very helpful. Can’t wait for additional modules to come out.

  • This is the rigging video I've been looking for...

Intro video alone is worth the price. This is the rigging video I’ve been looking for for several years now. I’m a professional working in the games industry and have always wanted a easy to understand and follow along rigging tutorial for Blender so that I can rig in Blender quickly and easily for personal projects and game jams etc. Now I can. Much Thanks!

I was looking for something like Rigify for a long time myself. I am glad people find it as useful as I do.
I plan to add content specifically geared towards exporting to game engines in the future.

      • The main subjects I need to learn are:

        1) How to properly export the rig to a game engine, since there’s a known issue regarding non- uniform scale caused by the Stretch To constraint in rigify default rigs.

        2) How to extend rigify with custom rig created by myself (custom cloth rig, custom limbs and so on).

Are they going to be addressed in this course?

        • Hi,
exporting to game engines is a slightly complicated topic. I plan to cover it in the future.

As for custom rigs: that’s what this course is all about!!! 😀 You can add all the custom limbs you desire.
I planning to cover cloth in a bonus session but it is not part of the main course!

Though they are remotely similar, they do have their own challenges. I really look forward to how you would approach working on them. (Thank you, in advance!!!)
