Course Intro

Do you find rigging in Blender difficult? Tried and failed to build advanced rigs for your characters? Do you find it takes forever to create even a rudimentary rig?

You’re not alone. Rigging is tough. It requires a high level of both artistic and technical skills.

Lucky for us Blender offers us an easier solution: a free addon called Rigify. It’s not enabled by default, therefore many people don’t even know it exists. And its’ advanced features are hidden behind a slightly unintuitive interface. Thus few artists utilize it to its full potential.

Due to lack of quality information a lot of Blender users think that Rigify is all about the Meta Rigs, especially the “Human Meta-rig”. But these are nothing more than quick presets that solves a common problem: e.g. rigging a simple humanoid character.

Rigify offers tools that allow you to solve less trivial rigging problems. When you learn how to use Rigify properly you can rig pretty much anything. To get an idea of the characters we’ll rig together in this course, see the images attached above.

Build your Rigs from Lego Blocks

Rigify is a modular rigging system. It provides the artist with easy to understand building blocks like legs, arms, spines, tails, and many more. Using those you can rig almost any character.

Traditional rigging, on the other hand, deals with abstract and complicated concepts like constraints, drivers, local vs world translations, matrices etc. The truth is, most artists won’t have the time to learn manual rigging at an advanced level. Thanks to Rigify, we don’t have to.

So Rigify is pretty awesome.

The only problem is figuring out how to use it.

➡This is where this course comes in.

You’ll learn how to rig any character in the following three modules: Rigify Basics, Rigify Video Manual, and Advanced Rigify Sessions.

Rigify Basics

is where you’ll learn the most important aspects of Rigify. This basic training is now available for free on my Youtube channel.
If you go through it and decide to buy the advanced chapters, please remember to purchase it here to support the wonderful people from Flipped Normals!
Chapter Overview:

  1. Intro to Blender Armatures
  2. Overview of the Rigify Workflow
  3. Rigging with Meta Rigs (biped and quadruped)
  4. Extending the meta rigs and  avoiding bad practices
  5. The Rigify Building Blocks, aka Rig Types
  6. Creating a custom Meta Rig from scratch: Alien Character
  7. Usability Improvements

Progress: 100%

Video Manual

is now available! It’s for people who want to understand every single option you find in Rigify.
Progress: 95% (a few very advanced concepts will be added very soon)

Advanced Sessions

are also being worked on. In this part, we’ll rig several complex characters together.
I’ll definitely include the Dragon and Two-headed Ogre you see above. These characters allow me to demonstrate creative and unorthodox usage of the Rigify tools. I am planning at least one more session. I will consider user feedback and decide the exact content later.

Progress: 25%

I have already prepared these rigs but recording the videos will take time.

As I get closer to completing the advanced chapters, the price will gradually go up. If you don’t want to pay $35+ in the future, get the course now!

⚠️A few warnings before you buy:

  • This course will be updated regularly. Make sure to set up your profile such that you get notifications for product updates. Check the message after you buy, as it contains a few ways in which you get notifications when the course is updated.
  • If you purchase now you’ll only get early access to the Basics course. Manual and Advanced Sessions will come later. “Basics” alone will give you a very solid base on which to build custom rigs.
  • I am working as fast as I can but creating good video tutorials takes time. I expect to have more content in the coming weeks and months. But there is no set release date for “Manual” and “Advanced Sessions”!

UPDATES:

6/14/2020 Update v2.0: I added Module 2 “Rigify Manual”. This series of videos explains every Rig Type and all of their option both before and after generation. No more guesswork!

05/29/2020 Update 1.15: I was informed that a 3d mesh was missing from the files in Chapter 3. I just uploaded a fixed zip package. I am also uploading the missing BLEND file as a separate download. Existing users can just get the new blend file and replace it in the chapter 3 folder.

5/20/2020 Update v1.1: The Module 1 Basics videos were updated with better editing. Most videos are now 20% shorter while preserving all the information. Some parts are made clearer through annotations. (Recommended action: download Module1_Basics.zip again and replace your local files)

  • Awesome tutorial

Just what I was looking for. A quick way to rig 80% complete for posing characters from ZBrush. Can’t wait for the rest of the series.

  • Clear, Concise, and Fun

I had a lot of fun learning Rigify! Todor is a natural teacher. I especially liked that he purposely makes mistakes that help improve understanding. I am looking forward to the rest of the series!

    • Thank you, Brian! This is my first attempt to create an in-depth course, so your words are very encouraging. I am still working on improving my presentation.
Speaking of which new videos are coming in a day or two. 🙂

  • Very thorough, good explanations

I am an intermediate level user of Blender and have made a few simple rigs not using Rigify. This tutorial showed me the mostly hidden power of Rigify and I’ve started making custom rigs using the Rigify components. The instructor is clear and the example blend files that come with the course are very helpful. Can’t wait for additional modules to come out.

  • This is the rigging video I've been looking for...

Intro video alone is worth the price. This is the rigging video I’ve been looking for for several years now. I’m a professional working in the games industry and have always wanted a easy to understand and follow along rigging tutorial for Blender so that I can rig in Blender quickly and easily for personal projects and game jams etc. Now I can. Much Thanks!

I was looking for something like Rigify for a long time myself. I am glad people find it as useful as I do.
I plan to add content specifically geared towards exporting to game engines in the future.

      • The main subjects I need to learn are:

        1) How to properly export the rig to a game engine, since there’s a known issue regarding non- uniform scale caused by the Stretch To constraint in rigify default rigs.

        2) How to extend rigify with custom rig created by myself (custom cloth rig, custom limbs and so on).

Are they going to be addressed in this course?

        • Hi,
exporting to game engines is a slightly complicated topic. I plan to cover it in the future.

As for custom rigs: that’s what this course is all about!!! 😀 You can add all the custom limbs you desire.
I planning to cover cloth in a bonus session but it is not part of the main course!

          • There is a face rig for rigify. I cover it in the upcoming Advanced chapter (two-headed ogre).

          • Do you cover facial rigging as well? Is Riggify able to do that?
