Sculpting the Facial Features in Zbrush

Sculpting the Facial Features in ZBrush

In this fundamentals sculpting series, you’ll learn how to sculpt the essential facial features: Eyes, Nose, Ears and the Mouth. Every section starts off with the theory behind the facial feature, which will serve as a foundation for all your future sculpt. Next up, we show you how to actually sculpt the facial feature.

Learn the Fundamentals

Sculpting a full face can be incredibly daunting for beginner artists, as you have to keep so much in mind at the same time. In this series, we simplify everything down to the basics, where you’ll get a deeper understanding of how each facial feature works.

Breaking it Down

We break each part down into simple portions. It’s a lot easier to sculpt the nose if you can simplify it down into three section of bone, cartilage and fat – instead of complicated shapes with a thousand planes. Learn the importance of the caruncle of the eye, the antihelix of the ear and much more.

  • High quality information

Bought the course a couple days ago and I am loving it so far.
Although I am very new to sculpting I still found that I was able to make good results even though I never sculpted this in depth before.

One thing I would’ve liked to see were the reference images used in the sculpts.
They keep mentioning to use reference but it would be nice to see how they used said reference to translate it to 3D

  • Essential for the self taught

These tutorials on ‘sculpting the facial features’ are exactly what I needed to move forward and progress as a sculptor (highly amateur at that!). I started sculpting during the middle of the covid pandemic and always wanted to rely on my own skill and perseverance to be a better artist. However, inevitably there will always come a point (many in fact) where you need to understand what the professionals understand, and this only comes through the education and knowledge that they have to share.

The tutorials provided here are clear, concise, and very easy to follow (provided you have some understanding of whichever sculpting software you are using) and the results are just startling when you apply them to your own work.

I cannot wait to get stuck in to the other tutorials Flipped Normals have to offer.

Massive thanks to you guys for doing this!

  • Awesome for learning details of facial features

This was a great course! I highly recommend if you’re trying to learn how to sculpt faces. They break each part of the face (mouth, eyes, nose, ear) down into its basic anatomy and then walk you through how they sculpt it. This is also a great pre-course or post-course for the sculpting male/female faces courses (which I am working through now!).

  • Great tutorial

I really like how easy this tutorial was to follow. I like that it is not based of the software or tools but the fundamentals of what make these facial features work. I feel this tutorial would work well for anyone learning to sculpt human anatomy for both digital and traditional.

  • Nice tutorial

    Hey guys

I liked this tutorial. Very practical and problem solver. I can’t give you 5 stars, because I can open your ZBrush files. Would you mind fixing this problem with current versions of ZBrush ?
    Thanks

    • Thanks for the review! What issues are you having with opening the files? We tried it now and they open perfectly fine in ZBrush 2020.

      • That’s perfect. Works for me if loaded from Zbrush, but doesn’t work if double-clicked from desktop. Thanks again

  • Very informative!

I purchased this after deciding I was finally brave enough to try my hand at sculpting for real in zbrush. ( Which, by the way, was made possible by their intro to zbrush videos! )

This collection really broke down the various parts of the face, and did so in a way that’s easy to commit to memory. The theory provided during these videos is not so far in-depth in anatomy that you cannot follow, but it’s still built on what is clearly a firm grasp of proper facial anatomy that you can understand how to start.

These videos made figuring out how to sculpt these features a breeze, and I’m proud to say that after a few rounds of watching them and following along, I was able to create something that I am pleased with.

    Thanks again, guys!

  • Makes the head feel do-able

Presents a breakdown of key facial features into simplier elements. Personally, it made the head feel not as much of a daunting task. Definitely give this one a try if looking into sculpting.

    Thank you for your feedback.

  • Must Have for any character artist.

Bought this series and it was worth every Penney.
