Here’s a little work I did when playing around with per-particle field attributes in Maya. Before starting my transition into Houdini I was playing with the concept of creating intelligent creatures with a mass of particles. You might be surprised how many cool things you can find about Maya particles, a lot of them are hidden or undocumented. Here from about 40 lines of code we’ve got a colorful worm who seeks the red ball. The worm is cowardly, and will go into defensive mode if the ball scares it by moving too quickly.
