Trim Sheets for Game Artists

Learn the “What, Why and How” of trim sheets to get you started quickly developing high quality environment assets as a studio Environment Artist! During this 4.5 hour course, you will go from being introduced to the concept of trim sheets to capturing a high quality render of your completed environment assets, and the entire pipeline in between!

Essential for Environmental Artists

Familiarise yourself with what trim sheets are, and just how much of a powerful tool they become to an Environment Artist’s toolkit. You will learn when to use trim sheets and how to properly build and unwrap your assets to utilize these texture resources.

Procedural Freedom

Procedurality will be a big topic in this series, allowing us to harness the power of custom parametric materials within Substance Designer. By developing our trim sheets with procedural flexibility in mind, we will effectively open up our designs for endless reusability, further expanding the use-cases of our assets and our resourcefulness as an Environment Artist.

  • Great Substance Designer Course

The instructor does an incredible job explaining the ‘why’ for everything the course goes over. I really appreciated the short flash-forwards to future parts of the lesson. They illustrate the ways that planning out your project will help out down the line. I highly recommend this for anybody interested in environment art.

  • Let's comment this guy over here

This pure gold! If you’re considering buying this have in mind that knowing some basics of Substance Designer will help you a lot more than going on zeros, the process at the beginning is nice and the concepts are clear, later on, it gets a bit faster but you can totally follow along and get as much info as needed.
The blender part is also good, and I recommend watching some Blender 101 first if you don’t know if the guy will cover a basic intro to.
In resume: Get ready to move a lot of guys here and there, speed up your workflow and learn node witchcraft this will direct you on the right way to get started with trim sheets but there is still a lot to learn about them.

  • Awesome Tut

Great tutorial, I’m not usually too great with following video tutorials and absorbing their info, but this instructor is super good. It’s a well paced tutorial that speeds up gradually as you learn, the instructor is clear and teaches some pretty good workflow tips throughout the videos. I’m absolute rubbish with Designer, but going through this tutorial has given me confidence to try and incorporate it into more projects now.

The modelling is done in Blender, however you should have no issue following along with other modelling programs (I used Maya).

  • Packed with useful information

A really informative and fairly thorough intro to trim sheets. It covers a lot of topics including modelling, material creation, trim sheet planning and uv layout, with enough depth to set you up for future projects. The only thing missing is a video on setting up the model/materials in engine but most of that information is already available elsewhere.

  • Great Tutorial

The tutorial is really well done, the pace is fantastic, specially if you know some stuff about substance designer, but you are not too used to use it. There are a lot of nice techniques related to workflow and optimization.
I would happily get any new tutorial from this teacher, like an advanced tutorial about planning whole scenes with more complex trim sheets and modular pieces 😀
I highly recommend picking this up, also take a look at this teacher YT channel, there is ton of valuable info there about substance designer and PBR.

  • As a beginner I really enjoyed this

Fantastic tutorial – learnt a whole bunch of stuff. The instructor goes at a nice pace and explains concepts and best practices coherently and in a way that it sinks in and you remember it (which I always struggle with). Would highly recommend this if you’re looking to get your hands dirty with Substance Designer and Blender.

  • Rather good!

I highly recommend picking this up. I learned a ton about Substance Designer, planning my trimsheets, and how to unwrap an object for trim sheets. I would like the instructor to add an extra video if possible though, as the final result is only a render within Blender. It would be nice to see the instructor discuss some of the things to keep in mind when bringing trim sheet textures and trim sheet objects into say, Unreal Engine 4. But, there is information on this elsewhere. Lastly I think if you don’t use Blender you are missing out a bit on some of the content, but you can do the same stuff in Maya or whatever.
